Tummy Tuck Recovery, Week by Week
A tummy tuck is the procedure where recovery matters most, and where patients are told the least. This is the honest version, week by week. Your surgeon’s instructions always override anything you read here — every abdomen, and every patient, is different.
The first 48 hours
You will not stand up straight, and that is by design. The abdominal wall has been tightened, so you walk slightly bent at the hips to avoid pulling on the repair. You will be asked to get up and walk short distances within hours, not because it is comfortable, but because early movement is the single best thing you can do for circulation.
Week 1: drains, walking bent, and sleeping
Most patients go home with drains, which are uncomfortable and completely normal. You will sleep in a reclined position, knees supported. This is the hardest week and the one where having someone with you matters more than anything else you can plan.
Week 2: the first shower and the first real day
The first shower after a tummy tuck is a milestone patients remember. Drains usually come out in this window, depending on output. Swelling peaks and then starts to turn. You will still tire fast, and that is expected.
Weeks 3 and 4: driving, working, and lifting
Driving resumes when you are off narcotic pain medication and can brake without hesitating — not on a calendar date. Desk work often resumes in this window; physical work does not. Lifting stays restricted because the repair is still consolidating, and this is where patients most often do damage by feeling well too early.
Weeks 6 to 12: exercise and the scar
Exercise returns in stages, starting with walking and ending with core work — core is last for a reason. The scar goes through its worst-looking phase around this point, firm and pink, before it starts to fade. That is the normal trajectory, not a complication.
Months 3 to 12: when the result is final
Residual swelling can persist for months, especially at the end of the day. The contour you see at three months is close; the one at a year is the result. The scar continues to mature for up to eighteen months.
What makes recovery harder — and what makes it easier
Harder: smoking, uncontrolled blood sugar, going back to work too early, and being alone in week one. Easier: walking from day one, wearing the garment as instructed, hydration, protein, and having someone to call when something feels off at 2 a.m.
Recovering after surgery in Mexico: crossing back and follow-up
The question every patient from California asks is what happens after they cross back. Movement in a car for an extended period needs planning, and the trip home is scheduled around your recovery, not the other way around. You leave with a written recovery plan and an open follow-up channel with the clinic — not a phone number that nobody answers.
Warning signs that need a call, not a wait
Call the clinic, do not wait for your next appointment: fever, one calf swollen or painful, shortness of breath, a sudden increase in drainage or a change in its smell, or a part of the incision that looks different from the rest. None of these mean something is necessarily wrong. All of them mean somebody qualified should look.
Frequently asked questions
How long is tummy tuck recovery?
Most people are functional in two to three weeks and cleared for full exercise between six and twelve — your surgeon sets your dates.
When do drains come out?
Usually within the first week or two, based on output, not the calendar.
Will I stand up straight again?
Yes, usually within one to two weeks.
Is mini tummy tuck recovery shorter?
Generally, because less is repaired — but it treats less too.
